Rocket Yoga was developed by Larry Schultz in the late 1980s while he was teaching yoga to the band The Grateful Dead in San Francisco. Larry learned the Ashtanga Yoga method in Mysore, India, and went on to modify the first, second and third series in order make “advanced” postures more accessible to beginners. The sequence is mostly the same in each class, which begins with sun salutations before moving on to standing and seated postures, then inversions and arm balances. As with traditional Ashtanga, there is a strong focus on breath, bandha (energy lock) and drishti (gaze point) as tools for meditation.
